WELCOME TO RUBAGA DIVISION

Rubaga division, Kampala’s home of history and home to Buganda Kingdom’s largest palace (the Lubiri), the Parliament (the Lukiiko) and the magnificent Catholic and Anglican Cathedrals as well as the oldest hospital in Uganda, Mengo Hospital established in 1897. This culturally rich division of Kampala is made up of the following suburbs;

THE HISTORY & TOURISM

Rubaga division has served as the Buganda Kingdom’s political and administrative centre. This hill is epicenter of Uganda’s political history and is made of various historical; religious, cultural and political sites as well as leading educational institutions. These include;

Mengo Hill where the present Lubiri (the Royal compound) and the Lukiiko, Buganda Parliament (Bulange) are located. The Lubiri sits on 260 acres and hosts the Kabaka’s palace (Twekobe) built in 1922. The Buganda Parliament and the Lubiri are split by a historical road called the Royal mile or Bulange Way.

Namirembe Hill, which hosts the oldest Cathedral in Uganda. The Anglican

Church was founded in 1890 and St. Paul’s Cathedral was constructed in 1915. The first largest congregation of over 10,000 was in 1904 with the chief guest Kabaka Daudi Chwa II

Lubaga Hill, this is home to the Catholic Church which was founded in1 889. It was donated to the French Fathers by Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda. The exquisite, handcrafted St. Mary’s Cathedral, Rubaga was constructed in 1925. Rugaba Hospital and Girls School are also located next to the Cathedral.

Kabaka’s Lake – Africa’s largest man – made lake.This lake was dug from the request of Kabaka Mwanga II in 1880 to provide an access route to Lake Victoria where he had a palace and enjoyed fishing.
